HEADROOM LÀ GÌ ?
Đây là khái niệm rất quan trọng trong biểu diễn nhạc sống, nhưng bạn sẽ rất dễ hiểu qua những ví dụ sau của tôi:
Ví dụ : Bạn là người cao 1,7m – em bạn cao 1,9m. Nhà bạn có một cái cửa cao 1,9m. Khi bạn đi vô cửa: không có vấn đề gì xảy ra. Cái cửa vẫn còn cách đầu bạn 20cm. Nếu bạn nhảy lên một chút ( chừng 20cm, thì đầu của bạn khẽ đụng nhẹ thành cửa). Nếu em bạn đi qua cửa, thì chiều cao của em bạn với cái cửa vừa bằng nhau, không có một chút dư nào. Và nếu em bạn còn hứng chí nhảy lên lúc đang qua cửa thì…..? Tơi có thể gọi khoảng dư 20cm từ đầu bạn đến thành cửa là headroom. Và headroom của bạn đang có là 20cm. còn em bạn thì không có chút headroom nào cả. Headroom của em bạn là 0.
Tương tự như vậy trong âm thanh:
Nếu hệ thống âm thanh của bạn có thể phát được 120dB, mà tín hiệu trung bình của bạn chỉ là 100dB, thì bạn đã có khoảng headroom là 20dB.
Vậy headroom khoảng cách biệt dự trữ từ tín hiệu bình thường đến tín hiệu tối đa trong hệ thống âm thanh.
Nếu tín hiệu của chúng ta dùng hết khoảng headroom và chạm vào mức giới hạn của mức tín hiệu tối đa, ta gọi trường hợp đó là Clip; Overload (quá tải). Trong trường hợp này, thì âm thanh bắt đầu méo tiếng (distortion).
